It is still running, so there is plenty for me to celebrate, as many businesses do not make it to year 5.

Secondly because September has to do with languages.

Language fascinates me for many reasons.

I am puzzled by the nuances between different languages and how things might be expressed; such as 'I am hungry' in French is not 'je suis faim' but 'J'ai faim' which would be 'I have hungry' in English.

There are also clues within each language as to the origins of words, sayings or expressions.

Take the word 'douche' for example. It means shower in French and German. Yet in English it's only used as a medical term and in the US it means an unpleasant person.

Another of my favorites is the fact that September, October, November and December or septembre, octobre, novembre et décembre in French give us a clue to the fact that they were the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth months of the year in Roman times.

There are two events in September that celebrate languages.🎉

The European day of languages is on 26th Sept 2020

Though you might not know his name you probably do know, at least one of his fables, 'the hare and the tortoise' - 'le lievre et la tortue'.

La Fontaine celebrated!

Jean de la Fontaine died in Paris on the 13th April 1695. 2020 was to celebrate the 325 years since his death. Any celebration of this writer and his work were completely eclipsed by the Corona virus so this is my contribution to celebrate him.

According to Wikipedia, Jean de la Fontaine is one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France, as well as in French regional languages.

Other Fables include 'the ant and the cicada' - 'la cigale et la fourmi' and the 'oak and the reed' - 'le chene et le roseau'.

Discover his fables in English and French

There is a bilingual book where you can find 8 of his fables, including thee which I mention. “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” which means if you purchase from the link, you will not be charged any more, thought I will receive a small commission which helps keep these pages up to date. You can find other bilingual books on my books and reviews page

Here is 'The crow and the fox' - 'Le corbeau et le renard', which you can read or listen to (French version only by foolwing this link.

Despite the weirdness of this group of Zebras that walk on 2 legs, I think is is a well constructed story.

I love a cartoon that helps children understand that even if you are friends, everyone is different and has their own reason for doing or not doing something.

Understanding rather than judging and keeping the doors of communication open are the way forward.
I then <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">I ended up<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";"> pondering on <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">how long it is taking me to learn the words of English carols. As children we absorb these songs <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">effortlessly<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";"> <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">and remember them forever <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">it seems<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">. This is probably due to the fact they connect to the language as well as the music parts of the brain, rather than just one area.
<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">

<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms"; font-weight: bold;">Songs help us learn more than language.

<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">You may realise the language used in the songs reflects culture, in this case the Christian faith. But children learn more than that. They pick up on the more subtle messages that come along with them. Their brain is not yet able to rationalise the message to decide if it is true or not. Hence they believe in Farther Christmas.
<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">

<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">In this one (Petit Papa Noel) the child feels he is to blame for making father Christmas go out in the cold. <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">In 'Au grand St Nicolas' mentioned earlier, <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">you need to always be good to get presents.
<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">

<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">Like all children I wasn't always good. I <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">would worry that because, I had argued with my sister, I was not good enough to get treats. <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">This was my overriding feeling and though I was relieved to get a present, that was not enough to change the feeling of not being good enough.
<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">

<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">This feeling is one that still hold me back, now and again, even though I realise it is only so, if I believed it is. So when I had my son, I was <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">very conscious about <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">the songs and language I used<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";"> <span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">with him, hence the selection of songs that I then translated and which became my bilingual Nursery Rhyme book and CD.
<span style="font-family: "comic sans ms";">The charities I support are also chosen very carefully. This year, I have decided that I will donate 35% of private sales to a charity that has become close to my heart as it sits with my values and is organised by a wonderful local women Rosa Matherson.
Fun is the key to learning.

We all know it is hard to take in new information and concentrate when we are stressed, so it is not surprising to us the children are not thriving in schools.

We have been home educating our son for just over a year now. It has taken a lot of the stress out of the leaning process (school runs, deadlines, the stress from the teachers of new targets, etc...not to mention bullying.)

We focus maths and English around his interests and he is so much more engaged and happy. This is because he sees it as fun, not a lesson, something he has to do and complete or else.... as it was in school.

As I know, no one can teach anyone anything, we all just learn things by being exposed to them or because we have an interest in them. We don't teach our babies to walk nor to talk they just learn to do it by exposure. So I have always exposed my son to French, rather than teach it, and this is is how I ended up writing my bilingual book, so as a baby he had the same nursery rhymes in English and French.

Super hero

More recently I have been reading some French children's magazines called Pomme D'api. My son has really taken to the adventures of a little super hero called Sam Sam.

After I noticed there was a link to one of songs in the story and seen seen the cartoons, he now wants to watch one every night, as part of his bed time routine. Along with the the other stories in the magazine of course. From my point of view the more he want the better, so I am happy.

This makes exposing him to French so easy and fun for both of us.

Here is a link to one of the many Sam Sam you can find on Youtube

I hope your little ones enjoy them too.

Listening and understanding is the first stage in being able to speak a language. This is how any child learns, yet when you learn in a school you have to be able to read, write and speak it grammatically correctly from day one. It is not surprising that so many people give up because they say it is hard. It is, when you attempt to learn a language that way.
Two teachers in Oxford have started running French, Spanish and Mandarin classes for babies.

Young children can cope with learning up to four languages even before they speak English, research has shown.

The classes are full of songs, nursery rhymes and stories to stimulate their young minds.

This is the type of thing I have been doing with French, in Swindon since 2013 .

There are many benefits of learning a language early, some which may surprise you and which go beyond the use use of a second language.

Here are podcasts that explain more and about how children learn and benefits of learning other languages.
It is really done well and the bilingual format gets across the point that
languages are spoken at a certain pace and that you need to speak and listen at
that pace. That’s probably the key feature and benefit of the book. The
fact that these are nursery rhymes, implies that they should be repeated time
and again until second nature, very clever. The illustrations make more sense once
you are listening and start singing along with the kids.”

Have a laugh

I just received this email and though it was a brilliant example of the importance of good quality translations!
I hope you enjoy it.

A friend went to Beijing recently and was
given this brochure by the hotel. It is precious.
She is
keeping it and reads it whenever she feels depressed.

Getting There:

Our
representative will make you wait at the airport. The bus to the
hotel runs along the lake shore. Soon you will feel pleasure in
passing water. You will know that you are getting near the hotel,
because you will go round the bend. The manager will await you in
the entrance hall. He always tries to have intercourse with all
new guests.

The
Hotel:

This
is a family hotel, so children are very welcome. We of course are
always pleased to accept adultery. Highly skilled nurses are
available in the evenings to put down your children. Guests are
invited to conjugate in the bar and expose themselves to others.
But please note that ladies are not allowed to have babies in the
bar. We organize social games, so no guest is ever left alone to
play with them self.

The
Restaurant:

Our menus have been
carefully chosen to be ordinary and unexciting. At dinner, our
quartet will circulate from table to table, and fiddle with
you.

Your Room:

Every room has
excellent facilities for your private parts. In winter, every room
is on heat. Each room has a balcony offering views of outstanding
obscenity! .. You will not be disturbed by traffic noise, since
the road between the hotel and the lake is used only by
pederasts.

Bed:

Your bed has been
made in accordance with local tradition. If you have any other
ideas please ring for the chambermaid. Please take advantage of
her. She will be very pleased to squash your shirts, blouses and
underwear. If asked, she will also squeeze your trousers.

Above All:

When you leave
us at the end of your holiday, you will have no hope. You will
struggle to forget it.

Obviously, it has been translated directly, word for word from Mandarin into English. This is not the way languages work. You have to understand the meaning of words depending context. I came across some children's bilingual books that also seem to have applied the same principle so I have added a list of the many I am happy to recommend on my books and reviews page

Have you come across any funny translation? Please share them below and we can all have a laugh.
I was lucky enough to learn French and English as a baby and I love exploring and discovering Spanish. Communication is more important than the grammar and that is what is so interesting about different languages, we can communicate the same thing in many different ways.
This was a question I was asked recently in a post-natal group I was
delivering to. It came from a woman who prior to having her baby was in
a highly professional, highly trained, highly stressful job and was
excelling at it. She was at a loss as to how this little bundle of love
and light was rendering her completely incompetent!

I sympathised, poured her a hot cup of tea and then asked her: why are you surprised?
Just because you are a lawyer/ A&E consultant/ teacher/ designer
when you have your baby, and successfully managing and thriving in that
role, does not automatically mean you will cope as a parent.

Why?

You had training, learning, exams for your job. Years of it. Most
probably your only introduction to being a parent was watching your own
parent you, watching a friend/ sister, and attending a 3 session
antenatal class (and that really only talks about the delivery and a
fraction of what comes after). Why do you think you are not going to
struggle and have dark days? There is no 'parenting training' and no baby manual.

Being a teacher/ lawyer/ gardener provides some degree of emotional
separation. You most probably do not teach your own children, represent
your own children or garden for your own children. When it is something
of you and from you which is there making demands of you that you're
not sure what they mean, it is different. It is difficult. It is hard.
It can hurt so much more to feel so useless or unknowing. There feels
more at stake and you are emotionally invested in this little being more than you've been in anyone before.

Your job probably had working hours. Whether you had the odd overtime
day or went in on the occasional weekend to catch up, there was still a
break. Time out. Physical separation. Parenting is 24/7. Sometimes
there can be no break, at all, for days... It can be an incredible adjustment

to try and make: having demands made on your time, energy, and body constantly.

You can do it though- it DOES get easier!
I know that is a bitter pill to swallow when your baby has been crying
for 37 hours and has been feeding for an hour, every hour. Right now you
probably want to reach through the screen and throttle me with my own
platitudes! You don't want to hear that it will get easier, you want it
easier now! Understandably. So here's a few ideas on how to do that:

Take a few very deep and very long breaths. Drop your shoulders, relax your toes. Breathe again. Allow some seconds to gather yourself together and get some distance and perspective. Breathe again.

Give yourself a break- literally and figuratively. Knowing now why it
is not an automatic given to be able to cope as a parent, stop being so
hard on yourself! It is not easy, there are no rules. You can only do what you can, when you can.
And take a physical break: hand the baby over to someone in your
support network, crying or not. Go for a walk. Go to bed. Whatever you
need to do to feel recharged and calm, do it.

talk to another parent. Go see a fellow mother, go to a baby group or
have someone come to visit you. You may not feel like exposing your
parenting inadequacies to the world but actually, admitting your struggles and sharing them with others,
can be very healing and helpful. You will feel you are not alone which
may not solve your immediate problem but can be incredibly reassuring.

remember who you were 'before baby' (bb) and connect with that. As a
teacher/ lawyer/ engineer you had numerous skills and talents, draw on
them to help yourself through the difficulties. Just because you aren't
'trained as a parent' doesn't mean all your other abilities are
obsolete- you just need to be creative in using them to your own
positive effect. Also, it is helpful if you can, to reconnect with activities you used to do
'bb': arrange to go horse riding/ start knitting/ taking photos-
whatever you used to do that was part of 'you'. You may not be able to
do the 3 day sea kayaking trips of old but a little bit of something is
better than nothing and will ease the feeling of being completely
disconnected with yourself.

These are just some of the ways you can make things easier, now. If you
want to take a look at a more comprehensive range of suggestions, you
will find tips for new parents on how to thrive rather than survive here.
Remember: parenting is so much about feeling your way as you go.
There is no other 'job' that dumps you in the deep end quite like
parenting. But you can do it. You can.
